PE and Sport Premium for Primary Schools

The PE and Sport Premium is designed to help primary schools improve the quality of the PE and sport activities they offer their pupils.

It was set up in 2013 to improve the provision of physical education (PE) and sport in primary schools. The government provided an additional £150 million per annum for academic years 2013 to 2015. The success of the PE and sport premium has led the government to extending their pledge and providing additional funding until 2020. This funding, provided jointly by the Departments for Education, Health and Culture, Media and Sport, is being allocated to primary schools. The funding is ring-fenced and therefore can only be spent on provision of PE and sport in schools.

This year Shirley Infant School will receive £17,790 in Sports premium funding. We have planned to use the funding to develop PE in the following ways:

  • Professional development continued for staff with training in Real Legacy.
  • To increase parental engagement and children’s physical activity outside of school through Real Play.
  • To increase participation in healthy competitive sports by taking part in intra and inter sport competitions.
  • To offer a broad experience of a range of sports options at lunchtime with dedicated Sports Coaches.
  • To offer bespoke sessions for Gifted and Talented pupils.
  • To raise the profile of PE and Sport across the school and community through developing our outside spaces.
  • To continue to foster our ethos of “Every Child, Every Chance, Every Day” with a focus on ‘achievement for all’.

We are looking to create pathways for children to continue to be active beyond school.

If you have any super sporting ideas, please get in touch with Mrs Watts, our PE and Sports leader.

“Healthy body, healthy mind”

We are very proud to be working closely with Shirley Infant school in a variety of areas.  We deliver our sessions based on our ethos;

T - TRY

E - ENERGY

A - ATTITUDE

M - MAKING NEW FRIENDS

This is at the very focal point of our delivery whether it be a lunchtime club / after school club or PE. We are excited to announce that we will once again be preparing and supporting year 2 children to become lunchtime sports leaders. This was a great success last year as the children worked with our coaches in running lunchtime challenges.  They progressed to running these sessions on their own and even got to wear their very own Team Spirit Sports leader T-shirts. Using our ethos they supported their piers with positive encouragement and ensured everyone can join in.

Every half-term we run school assembly's and set challenges for the children to take part in. These are fun challenges to encourage everyone to try knew things and share what they have achieved with pier groups and teachers. The challenges revolve around healthy active living and team work.

Each term we also run School cluster events where the year 2 children get to compete against Hollybrook and Wordsworth in a variety of activities. This proved very popular last year and once again we are very excited to be delivering this event again.

We are working very closely with Mrs Lubbock-Smith who is so passionate about healthy lifestyle / sports delivery and the positive effect it can have on children. Regular meetings and forums within the school ensure we keep all sessions fresh and each child has sport and healthy lifestyle as part of their journey at Shirley Infant school.  We are very proud to be part of each child's journey and will continue to encourage every child to 'Enjoy and Achieve' through sport. As Sports director of Team Spirit, I am looking forward to a fantastic year ahead. We also provide out of school holiday courses. Team Spirit Sports Coaching

Intra School Competitions

Each half term the children will attend a PE assembly. In this assembly a sporting goal or focus will be launched to inspire the children to take part in physical activity during lunchtimes or outside of school.

Autumn Focus

This term we will be focusing on ‘Firsts’. Children will be set the challenge of trying a new sport. Children will be celebrated if they try something new over the term. This could be playing with a new piece of equipment or joining a new club.

Inter School Competitions

Each half term children in Year Two will take part in a competition against other schools in our Trust. This is an opportunity for all children to compete and achieve success. During these events the children learn about good sportsman/woman values. Please look out for pictures of these events.

We are fully committed to the well being of children. We believe that by promoting Daily Physical Activity (DPA) in school, we will be supporting children to maintain active lifestyles well into adulthood. This also supports the physical activity guidelines of children taking part in at least 60 minutes of physical education a day.

Every day each class will take part in 10 minutes of DPA. Examples of what we offer are:

  • The Golden Mile
  • Yoga
  • Mindfulness Minutes
  • Fitness Centre
  • Dancing

The teachers enjoy this time as much as the children! Watch this space for photographs of DPA in action!

The children take part in two PE sessions on a weekly basis. These usually consist of one indoor PE session and one outdoor PE session.

Autumn

This half term in Year Reception, the children will be developing control in large and small movements and in gymnastics they will be learning to handle a range of equipment safely and negotiating space.

This half term in year one the children will be developing their rolling, throwing, bouncing and catching skills and applying these skills in a range on mini games. In gymnastics they will be recapping on the 5 basic shapes: tuck, pike, straddle, star and straight and learning how to perform a log roll.

This half term in year 2 the children will be developing their hockey skills. They will be learning to strike and dribble the ball. They will be applying these skills in a range of mini games where they will develop their attacking and defending skills.

When the children reach Year Two they get the opportunity to apply to become a Sports Leader. They will be responsible for delivering lunch time activities for all the children in the school. They will receive training for this from Darren and Mrs Watts. They will also have a role in assisting sporting competitions.
