Communication at Shirley Infant School

At Shirley Infant School, we will communicate with you in several ways, depending on the type of information we need to send you.

Marvellous Me
• Teachers and the Senior leadership Team (SLT) use Marvellous Me to send messages home
• You will be issued with a join code and can sign up at www.marvellousme.com

MCAS (My Child at School)
• MCAS is the parent communication system linked to our information management system, Bromcom
• The office staff use MCAS to send out messages and the weekly school newsletter
• Parents receive information either:
o through a notification via the MCAS app (if they have downloaded to app their phone)
o through an email (if there is no app downloaded)
•  A guide on how to access MCAS is available at https://docs.bromcom.com/knowledge-base/mcas-parent-guide/
• Information regarding school closures or emergency events will be sent using MCAS/Bromcom

Weekly Comms (School Newsletter)
• Weekly Comms is sent out each Friday via MCAS
• It contains important notices regarding upcoming school events, messages from the headteacher, celebrations of school achievements, and relevant information regarding wider community events.
• Weekly Comms always contains a list of important dates, and links to letters
• Weekly Comms is also available from the school website

Letters home via Bookbags
• Please check your child’s bag each day for any letters home from teachers or the office
School Website
• The school website contains information for parents such as the school calendar, uniforms, school contact details, policies, weekly comms and letter home to parents

SchoolGrid
• SchoolGrid is the website used to order your child’s school dinners
• If you do not set up a SchoolGrid account, your child will not be able to have a school dinner and must bring a packed lunch
• You will receive an email inviting you to create an account
• You can log in to your account at app.schoolgrid.co.uk

Telephone
• Any urgent messages regarding your child, such as illness or injury, will be communicated via telephone. Please ensure your contact details are up-to-date at all times, so we can contact you.
• Teachers may also telephone you to discuss your child’s progress

We understand that there are many different methods to communicate with you.  We know this is a lot to take on board initially, however like all organisations there is a reason why we have to use the different methods that we do.  Thank you for your understanding.

Further information

PAYMENTS: Payments can be made by the My Child at School App/website, cash or cheque made payable to Shirley Infant School.  Please ensure that any payments are sent to the office in a sealed envelope clearly marked with your child's name.

SCHOOL MEALS: All infant age children are entitled to free school meals as part of a government initiative.  Meals are ordered in advance using the SchoolGrid website, your child simply chooses with you at home the meat, vegetarian, wrap/roll or jacket potato options.

REPORTING ABSENCE: If your child is going to be absent from school without prior authorisation, it is very important that the school is notified by 9:30am.  Any absence without reason will be marked as un-authorised.  Please telephone the school on 023 8077 5057 or e-mail  office@shirleyschools.co.uk.

LEAVE OF ABSENCE: Any requests for leave of absence should be given 3 weeks prior to the date required.  There is no entitlement for any family holidays or leave of absence during term time.  Requests for holiday will only be considered in exceptional circumstances.

ATTENDANCE: The school strives to achieve 100% attendance.  To help us to achieve this as a school, we would ask that you please be aware of the following points;

  • We can administer medicines in school for your child.  We ask that you bring the medicine into the office in the morning, where we will ask you to complete a medical form detailing your instructions for the administration of the medicine.
  • All children have times when they are feeling a little tired.  This should not be a reason for them not coming into school.
  • If your child has suffered from sickness or diarrhoea, the child should not attend school for 48 hours from the last bout of illness.  This is recommended to limit the spread of such infections.  However, we do understand that sometimes children are sick without contracting an infection and in these cases we would trust our parents' judgement on whether their child is ready to return to school.
